A New Season

Daffodils

What a difference a week makes...this time last week, we were covered with gorgeous snow. Today, however, is the first unofficial day of spring no matter what the calendar may say. Here is the first of the daffodils to bloom. Tulips and hyacinths are pushing up leaves. The roses are breaking bud (and desperately need me to finish pruning them.)

Today is also the day pitchers and catchers report for spring training. The 2010 Major League Baseball season has begun. WhooHoo!

That's the true harbinger of spring, not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of a bat on a ball. ~Bill Veeck, 1976

It's a time of new beginnings, of waking up old dreams. Shake off those winters doldrums and create something wonderful today.

Nothing makes my heart quite as glad as the first daffodil bloom of spring. Thanks for showing it to me. I didn't plant any this year, and the old ones didn't come up. I suspect something ate the bulb, nom, nom, nom. Or maybe they just gave out.

Our tulips and daffies are poking up too, about a month and a half too early (I live in Washington State).

But I'm one of the few people who loves the cold, dark, rainy winter days and nights. I loathe spring and I dread summer. I hide behind drawn shades, and lurk in my centrally air cooled home as much as possible. I don't like being outside when it's warm.

Today I sat on my back patio with a jacket and a heater. I was determined to be outside and be creative.

It was a beautiful thing full of frosty fingers and speedy thoughts.
