Words Wednesday

Nope, not Wordless....Words....thoughtful, funny, or timeless...

An interesting quote for a cold winter's day....

Antisthenes says
that in a certain faraway land
the cold is so intense that words
freeze
as soon as they are uttered,
and after some time
then thaw
and become audible,
so that words spoken in winter go
unheard
until the next summer.

~Plutarch, Moralia

I like Plutarch and that quote sparks my imagination. Wouldn't it be fun to begin hearing frozen words with each bud bursting open in the spring? I wonder what I'd hear.

It sparks my imagination, too, Beth. I keep imagining the words thawing on a warm summer day and shouting themselves into the air. Maybe the reason the old Scottish woman wants winter to last a long time is because she doesn't want some of her words to thaw. Regret.

Yes, I can see a short story or two from this piece.
