Full day kindergarten but only for a few weeks in the spring before first grade. One of favorite teachers - Mrs. McBroom, sixth grade. Math and art favorite subjects - least favorite handwriting. (Kept me from getting all A's.)
I was so excited to begin school. Kindergarten was half day and so I was a morning kid. Mrs. Malcomsen was beautiful in the eyes of this 5 year old. She wore colorful suits and her shoes matched! This was in North Wales PA, but she was from Boston. I insisted to my parents that my new best friend was Donner (not Donna). Somehow I threw an "r" onto the end of many words that year, because, "That's what Mrs. Malcomsen said."
There was no kindergarten in Mississippi in 1964--only a few weeks of a "pre-school" type program during the summer before school started. Mrs. Ashcroft was my teacher, and my most "memorable memory" is the smell of that beloved chocolate milk and cookie we got each day! Not surprisingly, my favorite subject in elementary school was reading. As for the rest of my schooling, I loved literature and grammar.
I have a question for you, as a writer -- I tend to believe that a reader can learn as much about an author by what the author doesn't choose to write about, as they can by what the author does write about. Do you think this is true, or not?
By the way, speaking of back to school, which university is your recent high school graduate attending this fall? --Jan
"I think that in everything we do, in every style of life, there is art to be found. Not just in the studios of talented artists, but in the gardens, homes, relationships, spirits, voices, and fashions of people you see everyday." ~Amy Butler
